Thayatal Overview

Thayatal National Park, located in the northeastern part of Austria, near the border with the Czech Republic, is a pristine natural oasis that covers an area of approximately 13 square kilometers (about 5 square miles). Established in 2000, the park is one of Austria’s smallest national parks, yet it boasts one of the country’s most diverse ecosystems. The park is designed to protect the unique and picturesque Thaya River valley, which carves through the landscape, creating steep valleys and lush, wooded hillsides.

The Thayatal National Park is characterized by its dramatic river gorge, dense mixed forests, and a rich mosaic of habitats that support an astonishing variety of flora and fauna. Despite its small size, the park is home to more than 1,300 plant species and a significant number of animal species, including rare and endangered birds, mammals, and insects. This biodiversity hotspot is a testament to the ecological richness of the area, which has remained relatively untouched by human activity.

One of the unique features of Thayatal National Park is its cross-border cooperation with the Czech Republic’s Podyjí National Park, which lies directly adjacent to it. Together, these two parks form a continuous protected area, showcasing an exemplary model of international conservation efforts. This collaboration ensures the preservation of the Thaya River valley’s natural beauty and biodiversity for future generations.

Visitors to Thayatal National Park can explore a variety of scenic trails that offer breathtaking views of the river gorge and the surrounding landscape. The park’s visitor center, located in the town of Hardegg, provides informative exhibitions about the area’s natural history and biodiversity, as well as guidance on exploring the park’s trails and sights.

Thayatal National Park is not only a haven for wildlife but also a place of serenity and natural beauty, inviting nature lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking to escape into the tranquility of Austria’s woodland landscapes. Its commitment to preserving natural habitats while fostering environmental education and sustainable tourism makes it a precious jewel in Austria’s national park system.
