Shebenik-Jabllanicë Overview
Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park (in Albanian: Parku Kombëtar Shebenik-Jabllanicë) is located in eastern Albania, along the border with North Macedonia. Established in 2008, the park covers an area of approximately 129 square miles (330 square kilometers) and is named after the Shebenik and Jabllanicë mountains that dominate its landscape. Known for its rugged, mountainous terrain, pristine forests, and rich biodiversity, the park is one of Albania’s most beautiful and untouched natural areas.
The landscape of Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park is characterized by towering peaks, deep valleys, and high-altitude plateaus. The park’s highest point, Mount Shebenik, rises to 7,191 feet (2,192 meters), offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The park is also home to numerous glacial lakes, rivers, and streams, which crisscross the valleys and provide a lifeline for the diverse ecosystems. The park’s remote and rugged terrain makes it a haven for hikers and nature lovers seeking solitude and adventure.
The vegetation in Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park is diverse due to the park’s varying altitudes and microclimates. The lower elevations are covered with oak and beech forests, while the higher altitudes feature alpine meadows and coniferous forests. The park is also home to many rare and endemic plant species, including wild orchids and medicinal herbs that thrive in the untouched mountain environment. In spring and summer, the meadows are filled with wildflowers, creating a vibrant and colorful landscape.
The wildlife in Shebenik-Jabllanicë National Park is abundant, with many species benefiting from the park’s relatively undisturbed ecosystems. Large mammals such as brown bears, wolves, lynx, and wild boars inhabit the forests and mountains, while red deer and roe deer are commonly spotted grazing in open areas. The park is also a critical area for birdlife, with species such as golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and owls regularly seen.
