Theth Overview
Theth National Park, nestled in the heart of the Albanian Alps in northern Albania, is a pristine and remote wilderness area renowned for its dramatic mountain landscapes, traditional stone villages, and rich cultural heritage. Covering an area of about 2630 hectares (approximately 26.3 square kilometers or 10.2 square miles), the park is centered around the village of Theth, which has become synonymous with the park itself and serves as the main base for visitors exploring the area.
Established as a protected area to conserve the unique natural and cultural environment of the Albanian highlands, Theth National Park is characterized by its rugged peaks, deep river valleys, and dense forests. The park’s geography is dominated by the imposing Accursed Mountains, which offer some of the most spectacular hiking and trekking opportunities in the Balkans. The landscape is punctuated by waterfalls, glacial springs, and the striking blue eyes of the Syri i Kaltër (Blue Eye) pool, a natural water feature that is among the park’s most visited attractions.
Theth National Park is also home to a rich array of flora and fauna, including several endemic and rare species that have adapted to the harsh alpine environment. The park’s isolation has helped preserve the traditional way of life of the local highland communities, whose stone houses and kulla (defensive towers) add a unique cultural dimension to the natural beauty of the area.
Visitors to Theth National Park can explore a network of marked trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints, historical sites, and natural wonders. The park’s trails connect to other parts of the Albanian Alps, making it a key destination for long-distance hikers. Despite its remote location, Theth offers basic accommodations and hospitality services, allowing visitors to experience the traditional lifestyle of the Albanian highland people.
Theth National Park stands as a testament to Albania’s commitment to preserving its natural landscapes and cultural heritage, offering an unparalleled opportunity for adventure, exploration, and cultural immersion in one of Europe’s last unspoiled wilderness areas.
