Pallas-Yllästunturi Overview
Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, nestled in the Arctic region of Finnish Lapland, is one of Finland’s most beloved and visited natural reserves. Established in 2005 through the amalgamation of the former Pallas-Ounastunturi and Ylläs-Aakenustunturi National Parks, it covers an expansive area of approximately 1,020 square kilometers (394 square miles), making it the third-largest national park in Finland. The park stretches across the municipalities of Enontekiö, Kittilä, Kolari, and Muonio, and is characterized by its distinctive fells, which are part of the Scandinavian Mountains.
The landscape of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is a stunning mosaic of rolling fells, pristine old-growth forests, and vast mires, interspersed with crystal-clear lakes and rivers. This varied topography supports a rich biodiversity, including a variety of Arctic and sub-Arctic flora and fauna. The park is a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as the willow grouse and Siberian jay, and is home to mammals like reindeer, which roam freely in the area.
One of the park’s most defining features is its clean air, reputed to be among the purest in the world, offering visitors a refreshing and revitalizing experience. The park’s network of well-marked trails and wilderness huts facilitates a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking, making it a year-round destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is also steeped in cultural history, with ancient Sámi sites and traditional reindeer herding practices contributing to the cultural landscape. The park’s visitor centers provide educational exhibits on the natural and cultural heritage of the region, enhancing the visitor experience.
As a testament to Finland’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty and promoting sustainable tourism, Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park offers a unique blend of breathtaking Arctic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural history, inviting visitors to explore and appreciate the serene beauty of Lapland.
