Bouma National Heritage Park Overview

Bouma National Heritage Park, situated on the island of Taveuni in Fiji, is an extraordinary showcase of the island’s pristine natural beauty and rich biodiversity. Covering an area of approximately 150 square kilometers (about 58 square miles), this park is a treasure trove of tropical rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and rugged coastal landscapes. Established in 1990, the park was created through a pioneering initiative that involved local communities in its management and conservation efforts, setting a precedent for community-based conservation in Fiji and beyond.

The park’s most famous attractions are the Tavoro Waterfalls, a series of three majestic waterfalls that offer visitors the chance to swim in clear, cool pools surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. The journey through the park to these waterfalls takes visitors through diverse ecosystems, including native rainforests that are home to an array of endemic species, both floral and faunal. Taveuni, known as the “Garden Island” of Fiji, boasts some of the most extensive biodiversity in the country, and Bouma National Heritage Park is a vital sanctuary for this rich natural heritage.

Bouma National Heritage Park also offers a variety of outdoor activities that allow visitors to immerse themselves in its natural wonders. Hiking trails, such as the Lavena Coastal Walk, provide opportunities to explore the island’s scenic coastline, traditional Fijian villages, and remote beaches. The park’s diverse habitats support a wide range of wildlife, including rare birds like the Orange Dove and the Silktail, making it a prime destination for birdwatching.

The involvement of local communities in the park’s management has ensured that the benefits of conservation and tourism are shared, promoting sustainable development and the preservation of traditional Fijian culture. This collaborative approach has made Bouma National Heritage Park a model for conservation and community engagement, offering visitors a unique and enriching experience that highlights the importance of protecting Fiji’s natural and cultural treasures.
