Neusiedler see-Seewinkel Overview

Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park, located in the eastern part of Austria, near the border with Hungary, is a unique and ecologically significant area that spans approximately 97 square kilometers (about 37 square miles). Established in 1993, the park is part of the cross-border Fertő-Hanság National Park with Hungary, showcasing the remarkable biodiversity and the distinctive landscapes of the Pannonian steppe region.

The park is centered around Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedler See), the westernmost steppe lake in Europe, characterized by its shallow waters, reed beds, and extensive wetlands. This diverse habitat creates an ideal environment for a rich variety of flora and fauna, particularly birds. Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park is renowned as one of Europe’s most important birding destinations, providing a haven for over 300 bird species, including migratory birds such as the avocet, stilt, and various species of geese and ducks, which stop here in significant numbers during their migrations.

The landscape of the park is a mosaic of salt ponds, meadows, and sand dunes, interspersed with traditional vineyards and agricultural lands that reflect the area’s long history of human settlement and land use. The unique combination of natural and cultural landscapes offers visitors an insight into the symbiotic relationship between people and nature in the region.

Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park offers a range of outdoor activities and educational programs, including bird watching, guided tours, cycling, and hiking, allowing visitors to explore its natural beauty and learn about its ecological significance. The park’s visitor centers provide informative exhibits on the area’s biodiversity, conservation efforts, and the cultural heritage of the surrounding communities.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Ramsar Site of International Importance, Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park is a testament to the value of international cooperation in nature conservation and the preservation of unique landscapes and biodiversity for future generations.
