Iguazú Overview
Iguazú National Park, located in the province of Misiones in the northeastern tip of Argentina, stands as a magnificent showcase of natural beauty and biodiversity. Established in 1934 and spanning an area of about 672 square kilometers (approximately 259 square miles), the park is famed for its centerpiece, the Iguazú Falls, one of the most spectacular waterfall systems in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, shared with Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park, presents a breathtaking array of over 250 individual cascades spread along the Iguazú River.
The falls are surrounded by a lush subtropical rainforest that is part of the larger Atlantic Forest biome, one of the most diverse and threatened forests on the planet. The park’s dense vegetation is home to an impressive diversity of flora and fauna, including several endangered species. Visitors to the park might encounter colorful toucans, capuchin monkeys, jaguars, and a variety of other wildlife that thrives in this protected area.
Iguazú National Park is renowned not only for the falls themselves but also for the surrounding ecosystem that provides critical habitat for countless species of plants and animals. The park’s network of walking trails and footbridges allows visitors to explore the forest and enjoy up-close views of the falls from various angles, including the awe-inspiring Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), where the largest volume of water plunges into a deep chasm.
The park offers a range of experiences, from boat tours that take visitors near the base of the thundering falls to tranquil walks through the verdant rainforest, providing opportunities to appreciate the area’s natural wonders and biodiversity. Iguazú National Park serves as a vital conservation area, preserving the unique ecosystem of the Atlantic Forest and offering visitors the chance to witness the majestic beauty of the Iguazú Falls, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike.
