Established in 1993, the park spans an area of approximately 20 square kilometers (about 7.7 square miles), with an additional 27 square kilometers (approximately 10.4 square miles) of surrounding nature reserves, creating a comprehensive protected area that preserves a significant portion of the Swedish natural landscape.

The park is celebrated for its primeval forest, one of the few remaining in Southern Sweden, offering a glimpse into the Scandinavian wilderness as it existed thousands of years ago. Tyresta’s landscape is characterized by its dense forests, rugged rock outcrops, and numerous lakes and streams, which provide a habitat for a diverse array of flora and fauna. The park’s ancient forests are home to towering pines and spruces, some of which are several hundred years old, alongside a rich undergrowth of mosses, lichens, and fungi.

Tyresta National Park serves as a sanctuary for wildlife, including moose, deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species, making it an ideal spot for nature observation and birdwatching. The park’s lakes and wetlands also support a rich aquatic life, contributing to the area’s biodiversity.
