Established in 1909, the park covers an area of approximately 77 square kilometers (about 30 square miles), making it one of Sweden’s oldest and most celebrated national parks. Located near the small village of Abisko, the park is easily accessible by train, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The park’s landscape is characterized by its rugged mountains, vast birch forests, and the scenic Abiskojåkka river that flows through the valley. One of the park’s most notable features is the Lapporten, or “The Lapponian Gate,” a distinctive U-shaped valley that has become an iconic symbol of the region. Abisko National Park is also home to Torneträsk, one of Sweden’s largest and deepest lakes, offering breathtaking views and a serene environment.

Abisko’s location within the Arctic Circle means it experiences unique natural phenomena, including the Midnight Sun in the summer months, when the sun never sets, and the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in the winter, providing some of the best conditions in the world for viewing this spectacular light show.

The park boasts a rich biodiversity, including a variety of Arctic flora and fauna. It serves as a habitat for reindeer, Arctic foxes, and numerous bird species, making it an important area for wildlife observation. The varied terrain of Abisko National Park offers a range of outdoor activities, from hiking on well-marked trails, including sections of the famous Kungsleden (“The King’s Trail”), to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

Abisko National Park is not just a destination for adventure; it’s a place where visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquility of the Arctic wilderness, experience the unique natural phenomena of the high North, and explore the rich cultural heritage of the Sámi people, the indigenous inhabitants of the region.
