Domogled – Valea Cernei Overview

Domogled – Valea Cernei National Park, one of Romania’s largest and most significant protected areas, is nestled in the southwestern part of the country, spanning the counties of Caraș-Severin, Gorj, and Mehedinți. Established in 2000, the park covers an expansive area of approximately 612 square kilometers (236 square miles), embracing a diverse range of ecosystems from the Cerna Valley to the majestic peaks of the Southern Carpathians, including portions of the Godeanu, Mehedinți, and Vâlcan mountains.

The park’s landscape is a spectacular mosaic of towering limestone cliffs, dense forests, karstic landscapes, and thermal springs, underpinned by a rich geological substrate that has sculpted a unique and diverse topography. Domogled – Valea Cernei is renowned for its extensive old-growth forests, which are home to some of Europe’s last untouched tracts of ancient beech trees, forming part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that highlights the primeval beech forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe.

The trail traverses rugged terrain, offering stunning vistas of glacial lakes, dense forests, and the unique karst topography of the park.

It’s a challenging yet rewarding journey through some of the park’s most pristine landscapes.

Vanturatoarea Waterfall Trail

Rating: Easy

Distance and Elevation Gain: 2 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 330 feet (100 meters)

Description: This family-friendly hike leads to the spectacular Vanturatoarea Waterfall, one of the park’s most accessible and stunning natural features.

The path is relatively easy, winding through dense forests to the base of the waterfall, where hikers can enjoy the refreshing mist and scenic surroundings.

Cheile Tasnei Gorge

Rating: Moderate

Distance and Elevation Gain: 4 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 980 feet (300 meters)

Description: This trail offers an adventure through the dramatic Cheile Tasnei Gorge, showcasing towering limestone cliffs, lush vegetation, and the clear waters of the Tasna River.

It’s a moderate hike that provides a close-up view of the park’s karst formations and the chance to spot diverse wildlife.

Cerna Valley and Olteanu Peak

Rating: Moderate to Difficult

Distance and Elevation Gain: 8 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 2,625 feet (800 meters)

Description: Starting from the Cerna Valley, this trail climbs to Olteanu Peak, offering panoramic views of the national park and the surrounding mountain ranges.

The path is a mix of moderate and challenging sections, passing through meadows, forests, and rocky outcrops.

Hikers will experience the diverse landscapes and tranquility of the park’s higher altitudes.
