Domogled – Valea Cernei Overview
Domogled – Valea Cernei National Park, one of Romania’s largest and most significant protected areas, is nestled in the southwestern part of the country, spanning the counties of Caraș-Severin, Gorj, and Mehedinți. Established in 2000, the park covers an expansive area of approximately 612 square kilometers (236 square miles), embracing a diverse range of ecosystems from the Cerna Valley to the majestic peaks of the Southern Carpathians, including portions of the Godeanu, Mehedinți, and Vâlcan mountains.
The park’s landscape is a spectacular mosaic of towering limestone cliffs, dense forests, karstic landscapes, and thermal springs, underpinned by a rich geological substrate that has sculpted a unique and diverse topography. Domogled – Valea Cernei is renowned for its extensive old-growth forests, which are home to some of Europe’s last untouched tracts of ancient beech trees, forming part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that highlights the primeval beech forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe.
This national park is a biodiversity hotspot, supporting an array of flora and fauna, some of which are rare or endangered. It is home to over 1,300 plant species, including endemic and medicinal plants, and provides habitat for significant wildlife populations such as brown bears, wolves, lynxes, and chamois.
