Flatdogs Camp Overview

Flatdogs Camp is a Fair Trade Tourism certified safari camp offering outstanding value to our guests. The camp offers incredible game viewing experiences on game drives and walking safaris inside the South Luangwa National Park. Flatdogs Camp has been owner-run since conception and opening in 2000 and is a camp with a worthy reputation for excellent service and great value for money.

There are a range of accommodation options available in camp aiming to appeal to all kinds of safari-goers; the Crocodile Nest is an exclusive private house experience for up to 6 guests. There are 3 ensuite bedrooms as well as private living, dining and private swimming pool for the guests staying here.

The Jackalberry Treehouse is a wilder experience for the more adventurous since it is an open air treehouse with 2 ensuite bedrooms with private living and dining deck in between. The Treehouse looks onto a waterhole and is the ultimate natural safari option and game-viewing 24/7. In the main part of camp there are 4 stone and thatch chalets which are ideal for families, particularly first time safari visitors and younger travellers who might prefer four walls between them and the wildlife!

Last, but by no means least, the ensuite safari tents offer a traditional safari camp experience with canvas walls, large gauze windows and great views of the Luangwa river or your own private waterhole. There’s nothing quite like watching elephant cross the river in front of you from your bed or listening to hippo grazing next to you!

Flatdogs camp is unusual in the safari world as well in that it offers an a la carte menu to all guests with a range of delicious seasonal choices each day.

Flatdogs prides itself on having the most experienced and professional safari guides leading and looking after our guests. Learning about the African bush and exactly what you are seeing, hearing and smelling as you move amongst it, as well as using your guide’s knowledge of wildlife behaviour to predict what is going to happen on a sighting are things that stay with our guests forever.

Flatdogs is a Member in good standing with the National Parks Association.  The Association recommends that you explore and learn more about this accommodation option for your travels and South Luangwa experience.

Accommodation Highlights

Experience the thrill of South Luangwa’s legendary wildlife from the comfort of an open safari vehicle, expertly guided by some of Zambia’s most knowledgeable trackers. Game drives at Flatdogs Camp take you deep into one of Africa’s most wildlife-rich ecosystems, where encounters with elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and big cats are part of the daily rhythm.

Morning drives reveal the bush awakening in golden light, while afternoon outings transition into the cooler hours when predators begin to stir. With exceptional guiding and an intimate understanding of the land, each drive becomes more than a viewing—it’s a story unfolding in real time.

Step into the wild on foot and discover the bush in its most raw and immersive form. South Luangwa is the birthplace of the walking safari, and Flatdogs Camp offers a truly authentic experience led by highly trained guides and armed scouts.

Moving quietly through the landscape, you’ll learn to read tracks, interpret animal behavior, and appreciate the smaller details often missed from a vehicle. Encounters feel more personal, whether observing a herd of antelope or standing at a respectful distance from larger game. It’s an unforgettable way to connect deeply with nature and experience Africa as early explorers once did.

As the sun sets, South Luangwa transforms into a different world—one that few parks allow you to explore after dark. Flatdogs Camp’s night game drives reveal the hidden side of the bush, where nocturnal species emerge and predators take advantage of the cover of darkness.

With the aid of a spotlight, your guide tracks elusive creatures such as leopards, hyenas, civets, and bush babies, their eyes glowing in the night. The atmosphere is electric, filled with sounds and movement that heighten every sense. It’s a rare and exhilarating experience that showcases the park’s wildlife in a completely new light.
