Fiordland Overview

Fiordland National Park, located in the southwest corner of New Zealand’s South Island, is an awe-inspiring landscape of unparalleled natural beauty. Established in 1952, it is the largest of New Zealand’s 14 national parks, covering an area of approximately 12,607 square kilometers (about 4,868 square miles). This vast wilderness area is part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site, recognized by UNESCO for its outstanding geological features and remarkable natural beauty.

Fiordland National Park is renowned for its dramatic fiords, carved by glaciers over millions of years, which have created a stunning coastline that plunges into the deep waters of the Tasman Sea. The park encompasses some of the most iconic fiords, including Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and Dusky Sound, each offering breathtaking vistas of sheer rock faces, towering peaks, and cascading waterfalls. The interior of the park is equally spectacular, featuring dense rainforests, vast lakes, and rugged mountain terrain, including some of New Zealand’s highest peaks.

The park’s pristine environment supports a diverse array of flora and fauna, including many species unique to New Zealand. The dense forests are home to a variety of bird species, such as the kea, the world’s only alpine parrot, and the endangered takahe, a flightless bird thought to be extinct until its rediscovery in Fiordland in 1948.

Fiordland National Park offers a multitude of outdoor activities for visitors, from scenic boat cruises and kayaking in the fiords to some of New Zealand’s most famous hiking trails, such as the Milford Track, Kepler Track, and Routeburn Track. These tracks provide hikers with the opportunity to experience the park’s spectacular landscapes, from serene forests and alpine meadows to panoramic mountain vistas.

Fiordland National Park is a testament to the power of nature, offering visitors a chance to explore a pristine wilderness that remains largely untouched by human activity. Its dramatic landscapes and rich biodiversity make it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers alike.
