Nuuksio Overview

Nuuksio National Park, located in southern Finland, near the Helsinki metropolitan area, offers a serene escape into the wilderness, showcasing the beauty of Finnish nature. Established in 1994, the park spans an area of approximately 55 square kilometers (about 21 square miles), making it one of the smaller national parks in Finland. Despite its size, Nuuksio provides a rich tapestry of boreal forests, pristine lakes, and rugged landscapes characteristic of the Finnish lakeland.

Nuuksio’s landscape is a mosaic of dense forests, rolling hills, and over 80 small lakes and ponds, creating a diverse habitat for various plant and animal species. The park is a haven for wildlife, including moose, deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. It is also one of the few places in southern Finland where the flying squirrel, a species of special concern, can be found.

The park offers a wide range of outdoor activities for visitors of all ages and interests. Hiking is particularly popular, with a network of well-marked trails that meander through the forests and around the lakes, offering routes of varying lengths and difficulties. In addition to hiking, visitors can enjoy canoeing, fishing, bird watching, and during the winter months, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Nuuksio National Park also provides unique opportunities to experience traditional Finnish nature activities, such as berry and mushroom picking, which are allowed within the park’s boundaries. For those looking to extend their stay, there are designated camping areas and rental cabins available.

Despite its proximity to Finland’s capital, Nuuksio National Park offers a tranquil retreat into nature, allowing visitors to experience the peace and beauty of the Finnish wilderness. Its accessibility makes it a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking to enjoy outdoor activities or simply to relax in the natural environment. Nuuksio embodies the essence of Finland’s commitment to preserving natural landscapes and providing public access to the great outdoors.
