Kozara Overview

Kozara National Park (in Bosnian/Serbian: Nacionalni Park Kozara) is located in the northwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Republika Srpska region. Established in 1967, the park covers an area of approximately 13 square miles (33 square kilometers). Known as the “Green Beauty of Krajina,” Kozara National Park was created to protect the area’s natural landscapes as well as to commemorate the Partisan fighters of World War II, with the park’s Memorial Complex serving as a reminder of the region’s historical significance.

The landscape of Kozara National Park is dominated by rolling hills, forests, and mountainous terrain, with elevations ranging from 919 to 3,369 feet (280 to 1,027 meters). The central feature of the park is the Kozara Mountain, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area. The park is crisscrossed by several rivers and streams, including the Vrbasand Una rivers, which form scenic gorges and waterfalls. Hiking trails, mountain biking paths, and viewpoints provide access to the park’s dramatic landscapes.

Mrakovica Memorial

The memorial is set on Mount Mrakovica, a symbolic location where heavy fighting took place during the Kozara offensive. Designed by renowned sculptor Dušan Džamonja, the monument’s bold, abstract style reflects the sacrifice and struggle of the partisans, featuring towering concrete spires that evoke resilience and defiance.
