Sajama Overview

Sajama National Park, Bolivia’s first national park, was established in 1939 and is located in the Oruro Department, near the border with Chile. Encompassing an area of approximately 1,000 square kilometers (about 386 square miles), the park is named after Mount Sajama, the highest peak in Bolivia, which rises majestically to 6,542 meters (21,463 feet) above sea level. This stunning park is set in a remote, high-altitude region of the Bolivian Altiplano and is characterized by its spectacular Andean landscapes, which include snow-capped volcanoes, hot springs, geysers, and the unique queñua forests, which are among the highest forests in the world.

Sajama National Park’s dramatic environment is not only a haven for climbers and adventurers but also a sanctuary for a variety of Andean wildlife. The park is home to species such as the vicuña, the Andean cat, and a range of birdlife, including flamingos that inhabit the park’s wetlands and the Andean condor soaring above. The park also protects vast expanses of the high-altitude grassland ecosystem known as the puna, which supports these species along with traditional indigenous livestock grazing.

Cultural heritage is a significant aspect of Sajama National Park, with the Aymara people having inhabited this region for centuries. Visitors can explore traditional villages where the Aymara’s customs and way of life continue to thrive, alongside ancient churches and archaeological sites that reflect the area’s rich history.

Sajama National Park offers a range of outdoor activities, including mountain climbing, trekking through its striking landscapes, and soaking in natural hot springs. The park’s clear skies make it an excellent location for stargazing, further adding to its natural allure.

As a site of both natural beauty and cultural significance, Sajama National Park represents the diverse heritage of Bolivia, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the country’s splendid natural landscapes and the enduring traditions of its indigenous peoples.
