Fiordland Overview
Fiordland National Park, located in the southwest corner of New Zealand’s South Island, is an awe-inspiring landscape of unparalleled natural beauty. Established in 1952, it is the largest of New Zealand’s 14 national parks, covering an area of approximately 12,607 square kilometers (about 4,868 square miles). This vast wilderness area is part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site, recognized by UNESCO for its outstanding geological features and remarkable natural beauty.
Fiordland National Park is renowned for its dramatic fiords, carved by glaciers over millions of years, which have created a stunning coastline that plunges into the deep waters of the Tasman Sea. The park encompasses some of the most iconic fiords, including Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and Dusky Sound, each offering breathtaking vistas of sheer rock faces, towering peaks, and cascading waterfalls.
