Mercantour Overview
Mercantour National Park, nestled at the southeastern tip of France near the Italian border, stands as a magnificent example of the diverse and pristine landscapes of the Alps. Established in 1979, this park spans an area of approximately 685 square kilometers (about 264 square miles), making it one of France’s ten national parks. The park stretches across the departments of Alpes-Maritimes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, offering a breathtaking array of natural scenery that includes rugged mountain peaks, deep valleys, crystal-clear lakes, and lush forests.
Mercantour National Park is celebrated for its rich biodiversity and the variety of ecosystems it encompasses. It is home to more than 2,000 plant species, including several that are rare or endemic to the area. The park also provides habitat for a wide range of wildlife, such as the ibex, chamois, marmots, and wolves, which were successfully reintroduced into the wild in the 1990s. Birdwatchers can delight in spotting golden eagles, griffon vultures, and other bird species.
One of the park’s most notable features is the Valley of Wonders (Vallée des Merveilles), renowned for its thousands of Bronze Age rock carvings, which are among the largest open-air collection of petroglyphs in Europe. This historical site offers a unique window into the past, blending the natural beauty of the landscape with cultural heritage.
Mercantour National Park is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a plethora of recreational activities, including hiking, skiing, mountaineering, and canyoning. The park’s extensive network of trails allows visitors to explore its stunning landscapes, from the Mediterranean alpine meadows to the high alpine environments near the Italian border.
Mercantour National Park serves as a crucial conservation area, protecting the unique flora, fauna, and geological formations of the French Alps. It invites visitors to immerse themselves in its natural beauty, explore its rich biodiversity, and discover the cultural treasures hidden within its landscapes.
