Arenal Volcano Overview
Arenal Volcano National Park, located in the northern region of Costa Rica, is a captivating landscape that showcases the raw power and beauty of nature. The park covers an area of approximately 121 square kilometers (about 47 square miles) and was established in 1991 to protect the Arenal Volcano, an iconic and active stratovolcano that has become a symbol of Costa Rica’s natural heritage. The park is part of the larger Arenal Tilaran Conservation Area, which aims to preserve the rich biodiversity and ecological significance of the region.
Arenal Volcano itself is the centerpiece of the park, rising majestically to 1,657 meters (5,436 feet). Its last major eruption in 1968 transformed the surrounding landscape and has since drawn visitors from around the world. Although the volcano entered a resting phase in 2010, its presence continues to dominate the landscape, with its perfect conical shape providing a stunning backdrop to the park’s diverse habitats.
The park’s varied ecosystems range from rainforests and cloud forests to open lava fields and hot springs, creating a haven for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Visitors might encounter howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, sloths, and numerous bird species, including the resplendent quetzal and the black guan.
Arenal National Park offers a wealth of outdoor activities for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Well-marked trails allow visitors to explore the park’s natural beauty, including hikes to lava fields and through lush forests. The park also features hot springs, a result of the geothermal activity beneath Arenal, providing a relaxing way to enjoy the park’s natural wonders.
With its stunning natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and opportunities for adventure, Arenal Volcano National Park is a testament to Costa Rica’s commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism. It invites visitors to experience the awe-inspiring power of an active volcano and explore the vibrant ecosystems that flourish in its shadow.
